The Can-Am Defender and Maverick X3 share a brand badge but they're completely different machines from a windshield-cover perspective. The Defender is a utility rig with a more sloped windshield and longer cab. The Maverick X3 is a sport rig with a tall, near-vertical windshield and tighter cab geometry.
Each needs a different cover. Using a Defender cover on an X3 leaves the upper portion of the windshield exposed; using an X3 cover on a Defender drowns the top edge in extra fabric. Custom-fit per model is the only way that actually works.
TL;DR
- Defender: sloped windshield, longer cab — wider, longer cover with curved upper edge
- Maverick X3: vertical windshield, sport cab — taller, narrower cover with sharper upper edge
- Commander Max: full-cab variant with separate cover requirement
- Wiper vs no-wiper: order based on whether you run the OEM wiper or aftermarket
- Magnetic mount preferred — strap covers wear through cage powder coat
Can-Am Defender (2016-current)
The Defender is Can-Am's utility-side-by-side competitor to the Polaris Ranger. Built for ranches, hunting, and work-site applications. The cab is longer than a Maverick X3 and the windshield is more sloped.
Cover dimensions: approximately 52"×32" (model-specific) Cab variants: - Defender (2-seat) - Defender Max (4/6-seat) — longer cab - Defender HD7/HD8/HD10/HD11 — same cab, different engines
Why the Defender Max needs its own cover: the 4/6-seat extended cab is approximately 20" longer than the standard Defender, but the windshield itself is the same width. The cover for both has the same windshield dimensions, but check fit notes carefully if your Defender Max has aftermarket cab modifications.
With wiper option: the OEM wiper on a Defender is positioned at the bottom-left of the windshield. Order the wiper-cutout variant if you have one installed.

Can-Am Maverick X3 (2017-current)
The X3 is Can-Am's flagship sport platform. Aggressive vertical windshield (almost 90° to the hood), sport cage geometry, tight cab.
Cover dimensions: approximately 50"×38" (taller than Defender) Cab variants: - X3 (2-seat) - X3 MAX (4-seat) — longer cab, same windshield height
Why universal covers fail on X3: the X3 windshield is roughly 4" taller than a Defender. A "Can-Am cover" sold generically usually sizes for the Defender (more common) and leaves 4" of glass exposed at the top of an X3.

Can-Am Commander Max (2021-current)
The Commander Max is the full-cab variant. Half-doors or full-doors depending on trim, with a sealed cabin. Different windshield geometry from both the Defender and the X3.
Why Commander Max gets its own cover: the sealed-cab roof line creates a curved upper edge that wraps slightly forward at the top. A standard cover doesn't conform; the Commander-specific cover has a curved upper hem.

Can-Am Maverick MAVR Max (2025+)
The newest Can-Am sport platform. Different windshield from the X3 and Commander Max. Limited aftermarket cover availability — we custom-build for these.
Wiper considerations on Can-Am
Can-Am's OEM wiper kit is one of the better-engineered factory options — the wiper arm is positioned at the bottom-left of the windshield, doesn't interfere with the windshield seal, and pivots fully off the glass when parked.
If you have the OEM wiper: - Order the wiper-cutout variant - The cutout is positioned at the bottom-left to clear the wiper arm - The cover can stay installed while the wiper is parked (it pivots underneath)
If you don't have a wiper: - Order the no-wiper variant — clean unbroken bottom edge - Slightly cleaner aesthetic when installed
About 60% of Can-Am owners we work with run a wiper kit; 40% don't.
Why we make different covers for Defender vs X3 instead of one "universal Can-Am"
We tried universal Can-Am sizing in 2021. The return rate was 18%. Specifically:
- X3 owners complained the cover sagged 4" at the top
- Defender owners complained the cover bunched at the bottom
- Commander Max owners complained the upper hem didn't follow the roof curve
The model-specific custom approach is more SKUs to maintain but the return rate dropped to under 2%.
Cage protection — why magnetic mount matters
Can-Am owners ride hard, often in dusty or sandy environments. Strap covers fail particularly on Can-Am because:
- Cage powder coat is matte black — strap rub is highly visible
- Cage tubes are 1.75" diameter — straps need to be very tight to hold, which accelerates wear
- Aftermarket cage modifications are common; straps don't accommodate roll-cage mods
Magnetic covers attach inside the windshield only. Zero contact with the cage. No abrasion, no powder-coat damage, no rust spots.
Off-road durability of the cover itself
Can-Am riding tends to be hard on covers. Three things owners report scuffing covers most:
- Branch slap at speed — marine-grade UV-block vinyl resists punctures from average branches
- Dust accumulation — clean with the FIT Vinyl Cleaner Kit (mild detergent, no abrasives)
- Trailer transport vibration — magnetic covers stay attached at highway speeds; strap covers can shift
For abusive use cases, the 2-Year Extended Warranty add-on covers materials beyond the standard 1-year.
Riding accessories that work well
- Patented Removable Magnets — swap between rigs in your fleet
- FIT Vinyl Cleaner Kit — preserves UV coating, removes mud and bug residue
- Carbon Fiber Vinyl Upgrade — premium aesthetic for show rigs
FAQ
Can I use a Defender cover on a Maverick X3? No. The X3 windshield is approximately 4" taller and slightly narrower than the Defender. A Defender cover on an X3 leaves the top of the windshield exposed.
Does the Commander Max use the same cover as the Defender Max? No. The Commander Max has a sealed-cab roof line that requires a different upper-edge curve. The Defender Max is open-cab; the Commander Max is closed-cab.
Will a 2024 X3 cover fit a 2017 X3? Yes. The X3 windshield dimensions haven't changed substantially across model years. A cover labeled "2017-2026 X3" fits the entire production run.
Can I install a wiper kit AFTER buying the no-wiper cover? Yes, but you'd need to either modify the cover with a wiper cutout or buy a new wiper-cutout variant. Most owners just buy the wiper-cutout version up front if they think they might add a wiper later.
How does the Can-Am OEM wiper interact with a magnetic cover? The OEM wiper parks below the windshield seal. The wiper-cutout cover variant has an opening at the bottom-left so the cover can be installed without lifting the wiper. The wiper arm clears the cutout naturally.
Are Can-Am covers more expensive than Polaris RZR covers? Roughly the same — $379-$429 depending on model. The X3 and Commander Max are slightly more than the Defender because of the taller windshield (more material).
