Why We Only Build Covers in the USA (And Why It Matters)

6 min read

Most RV windshield covers — including the major brand names you see at Camping World — ship from factories in China, Taiwan, or Vietnam. We've toured those factories. The first batch is usually quality-controlled to spec; the next 50,000 covers are pumped out with rapidly degrading attention to detail.

We build every FIT Protection cover in Texas, with a 14-year master cover-maker named Roberto walking the production floor every day. Here's why that matters for the cover you actually receive.

TL;DR

  • All FIT covers built in Texas, USA
  • Master cover-maker Roberto Hernandez has 14 years on the production floor
  • Marine-grade UV-block vinyl sourced from Wisconsin
  • Magnets sourced from a US specialty manufacturer
  • Quality check on every single cover before shipping
  • Lifetime customer support by phone — same person you talked to during the order

Why USA manufacturing matters specifically for RV covers

Three things distinguish a USA-built RV cover from an overseas one:

1. Single-piece quality control

A US factory makes 100-300 covers per day. Each one is hand-inspected by a senior cover-maker before it ships. An overseas factory makes 5,000-20,000 per day across multiple product lines. Inspection is statistical sampling, not piece-by-piece.

What this means: a single bad cover from a US factory gets caught before it ships. A bad cover from an overseas factory gets shipped 95-99% of the time.

2. Consistent material sourcing

We source UV-block vinyl from Herculite in Wisconsin. The same fabric, same supplier, same testing standards on every cover for 7 years. Overseas manufacturers rotate suppliers based on price; the fabric on a 2026 cover may be different from a 2024 cover from the "same" brand.

3. Real warranty support

Our 1-year warranty is honored by the same person who built the cover. If something goes wrong, you call our customer support, the team checks our build records, and we ship a replacement or refund. Overseas covers usually have warranty support that's outsourced or non-existent.

Roberto's story

Roberto Hernandez has been building covers since 2011. He started as a sewing machine operator at a saddle-and-tack shop in San Antonio. He moved to RV cover manufacturing in 2014 and became our master cover-maker in 2018.

What Roberto checks on every cover:

  • Stitch density at the binding (12-14 stitches per inch)
  • Magnet placement in the binding pockets (within 1/4" tolerance)
  • Edge alignment when laid flat (square corners, no twist)
  • Fabric flaws (rare but happens — pulls, dye irregularities, weave defects)
  • Final fit check against a CAD pattern of the model

If any of these fails, the cover is reworked or scrapped. We average 2-3% rework rate (industry-good for hand-crafted goods).

Where our materials come from

A FIT cover is built from materials sourced primarily in the US:

Component Source Why this supplier
UV-block vinyl Herculite (Wisconsin) Marine-grade, 99.9% UV blocking, decades of testing
Edge binding tape Outerwear specialist (NC) Reinforced double-stitched binding
Sewing thread Coats & Clark (US distribution) Bonded polyester, UV-resistant
Neodymium magnets US specialty supplier Tested grip strength, tested for shipping
Storage bag Texas seamstress Local seamstress, branded packaging

Two materials we source overseas: - Suction tool plastic (China — only US suppliers don't make this small) - Some packaging materials (mixed sources)

Why we don't manufacture overseas

Three honest reasons:

1. We tried it

In 2017, we ran a small batch through an overseas manufacturer to test the unit economics. The first 100 covers were OK. The next 500 had quality issues that made our return rate spike. We pulled the line and went all-domestic in 2018.

2. Custom-build doesn't scale offshore

Our model is custom-fit per RV/UTV model. Overseas factories want to run 5,000+ units of the same SKU before tooling up. We can't promise that volume per model, so the unit economics don't work for them.

3. Customer support latency

US-based customer support means you talk to a real person who can check your order in 30 seconds. Overseas-supported brands typically have 24-48 hour response times because of time zones and language barriers.

What "Made in USA" actually means legally

The FTC has specific rules on what can be labeled "Made in USA":

  • All or virtually all of the product must be made in the US
  • Final assembly must be in the US
  • Significant transformation of components must happen in the US

A cover where the vinyl is woven in the US, sewn in the US, with US-sourced magnets, packaged in the US, qualifies. A cover where pre-made fabric is shipped from China and just cut + sewn in the US does NOT qualify (depending on extent).

We meet the FTC standard for "Made in USA" — about 92% of total component cost is US-sourced.

What this means for the cover you receive

Three things you experience as a buyer:

1. Faster turnaround on custom builds

A custom-fit cover (model not in our catalog) takes 7-14 days because the build happens in Texas, not 6-8 weeks because it has to ship from overseas.

2. Real warranty action

If something goes wrong, you call our 800 number, talk to a real person, and a replacement ships within 1-3 business days. No back-and-forth with overseas dealers.

3. Fabric you can trust

The marine-grade vinyl in our covers is the same vinyl used on yacht interiors and high-end boat covers. Tested in saltwater, intense UV, and abrasion. We know what's in the cover because we know who made the fabric.

The price difference

A typical FIT cover is $349-$499. A comparable overseas-manufactured cover (Camco, ADCO) is $80-$220. The price difference reflects:

  • US labor costs (3-5× overseas)
  • Higher-grade materials
  • Single-piece quality control
  • Real warranty support
  • Custom-fit per model (not generic class sizing)

Most buyers think the price difference is just "premium positioning." It's not. It's actual cost differences that affect the product you receive.

Beyond the cover — supporting US small business

Buying from FIT means:

  • 6 jobs in San Antonio depend on each batch of covers we build
  • Wisconsin's Herculite factory employs ~200 people across vinyl manufacturing
  • A California magnet supplier has ~25 employees making rare-earth components
  • Local seamstress in Texas handles our storage bags as a side business

The total US economic activity from one $429 FIT cover is approximately $340 in domestic wages and operational spend. That's why we can't compete on price with $80 imports — and why we don't try.

Why our customers choose us

In 2024 we surveyed 800 customers about their reasons for buying:

Reason % of customers
Custom-fit for my exact rig 73%
US-made / quality concerns with imports 58%
Patented magnetic mount system 51%
Better UV protection than alternatives 47%
Recommended by another RV owner 42%
Customer support reputation 38%
Lifetime warranty / long lifespan 31%

(Customers selected multiple reasons.)

The combination of custom-fit + US-made + magnetic mount is what most owners value. Not any single reason, but the bundle.

FAQ

Are all FIT Protection covers made in the USA? Yes. Every cover ships from our Texas facility. Some materials (suction tool plastic, packaging) are imported, but the cover itself is US-made.

Why are FIT covers more expensive than Amazon brands? US labor costs 3-5× overseas, marine-grade vinyl costs 2-3× cheap polyester, and custom-fit-per-model costs more than generic class sizing. The premium reflects real cost differences, not just brand positioning.

Do you have a factory tour or can I visit? Yes. We've hosted RV influencer tours and customer visits in San Antonio. Email us 2-3 weeks ahead and we'll schedule a tour.

How long has FIT Protection been in business? Founded in 2018, full custom-build operations since 2021. Our patented magnetic mount technology was developed in 2017-2018.

Where do the magnets come from? A US specialty manufacturer who makes rare-earth magnets for industrial applications. We use medical-grade neodymium with rubberized backing — the same composition used in MRI shielding components.

What if a US-made cover is defective? Call us at the support number on your order confirmation. We typically ship a replacement within 24-48 hours. Defects are rare (~2% of production) but when they happen, we own the issue.
